Most HVAC service providers are focused primarily on air conditioning and heating services. That can mean HVAC business slows down during the spring and fall, when milder temperatures mean reduced need for AC or heat.
But you still have employees on the payroll who may not be fully utilized during those slower months. Offering additional services can help you keep everyone busy and bring in extra revenue.
5 add-on services to build HVAC business revenue in the slower season
As an HVAC service provider, you have already earned the trust of your customers when it comes to the air in their home or business. So it’s natural for them to extend their trust and hire you to perform these related services when they have a need.
Here are five ideas to consider.
1. Duct cleaning & sealing services
As an HVAC business, you’re already installing ductwork for new and replacement heating and cooling systems. And while you’re doing other types of cleaning as part of preventative maintenance work, that typically doesn’t include cleaning the ducts. However, there are times when you customers can benefit from duct cleaning services.
For example:
- Ducts can collect moisture and get contaminated with mold, leading to musty odors and breathing problems for allergy and asthma sufferers.
- Over time, ducts can get clogged with debris that can reduce air flow.
- Rodents, insects, or birds sometimes get into ducts and vents and build nests, causing a whole host of problems.
- Ducts can develop holes and cracks that allow conditioned air to leak out into the walls and crawl spaces. That reduces system efficiency and drives up energy costs.
During your regular system inspections, you can check the condition of ducts and offer additional cleaning and sealing services to the customer as needed.
2. Mold remediation services
When working on air conditioning and heating systems, your technicians are in the position to discover mold infestations caused by water leaks. These could be in the ducts, as mentioned above, or in walls, ceilings, and crawl spaces.
When this happens, it can be a dangerous situation for the customer. The space might need to be evacuated until the mold is removed, which can disrupt a family or a business. And there’s the possibility of expensive damage to the space. Customers need it taken care of as quickly as possible.
If you offer mold remediation services, you’re in the position to secure the business right then and there. And the customer is happy because the problem is solved quickly and with little time or effort on their part.
3. Humidity control equipment
Keeping indoor humidity levels balanced and optimized can be tricky. And it’s important to your customers. You can offer add-on solutions for both high and low humidity conditions.
Air conditioning systems usually do a good job of removing excess humidity in summer. However, there are situations and spaces where extra dehumidification is needed, such as basements, locker rooms, and commercial kitchens. Why not offer dehumidification solutions as AC add-ons?
In the winter when heat is running constantly, customers can experience issues due to indoor humidity levels that are too low. And it’s more than just static electricity, dry skin, and bad hair days. Low humidity can damage expensive finishes and furnishings, such as wood moldings and artwork. It can also cause damage to electronics. Your customers can benefit from central humidification systems that are connected to plumbing and add moisture to the air distributed by the heating system.
4. Air quality testing
Especially in the city, people are more concerned than ever about the air they breathe. They are concerned about the effects on their health from breathing in mold, bacteria, viruses, allergens, VOCs, and other pollutants. Businesses are also concerned about the impact of air quality on workplace productivity and ultimately, revenue.
As an HVAC business, you’re the acknowledged experts on air. So it’s natural for customers to trust you to test their air quality and show them exactly what’s contaminating their indoor air.

5. Air purification technology
The market for indoor air quality solutions is expected to grow by more than $9 billion by 2024. And with the addition of air quality testing, you’ve now got a built-in way to identify customers who want and need air quality solutions.
Air quality has three components: temperature and humidity, ventilation, and contaminants. You’re already handling the first two for your customers. So offering solutions that remove contaminants is a perfect fit for an HVAC business.
Start by developing a portfolio of air quality technologies that meet the needs of your customers. Then you’ll need to train your technicians on how to install them. Once you do, you’ll be able to offer expanded services that help you not only get more business from your existing customers, but build new customer relationships as well.
