To become an HVAC or Refrigeration technician, what licensing or certifications do you need to earn? This is a tricky question, because HVAC license requirements vary by state.
We’ll start with an overview of the one certification EVERY technician needs. Then we’ll cover the licensing requirements by state. And finally, we’ll share some additional certifications you can earn that can set you apart from the rest.
EPA 608 certification is required for every HVAC technician
Refrigerants can be dangerous to work with and potentially harmful to the environment if not handled properly. That’s why the EPA’s Clean Air Act requires technicians (such as HVAC and Refrigeration technicians) who work with refrigerants to be certified. It’s called Section 608 Technician Certification. The certification test ensures you know how to work with these sensitive materials safely and responsibly.
This certification is not an HVAC license, but rather proof (at the national level) that you are trained and qualified to work with the refrigerant chemicals that power air conditioning and refrigeration systems.

HVAC license requirements by state
States that DO NOT require a license
While these states don’t have state licensing requirements, some areas within the state may have local licensing requirements.

In some states, employed technicians are not required to be licensed individually, but must work for a licensed contractor.

More HVAC certifications to consider
Especially if you work in a state that doesn’t require a license, it can be helpful to earn industry certifications to demonstrate your knowledge. TIP: Having these certifications can also boost your earning potential and help you get the best jobs.
NATE (North American Technician Excellence)
NATE is the largest non-profit certification organization for HVAC and Refrigeration technicians in this country. Employers and customers value NATE certification for technicians because it proves their expertise, their value, and their ongoing commitment to the industry.
There are two ways to earn NATE certification:
Certified HVAC Professional (CHP-5) pathway consists of 5 exams: HVAC Fundamentals, Electrical and Controls, Comfort and Airflow, Installation, and Service.
Traditional Core and Specialty exam pathway includes 2 exams: the Core exam and a Speciality exam of your choice (including Installation, Service, or Senior certification specialization.)
NATE also offers Entry-Level, Ready to Work Certificate for new technicians entering the field with no experience. The cost is $50 and you complete a basic exam after studying the provided guide.
ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers)
ASHRAE certification is intended for HVAC design and building performance professionals. When you earn a CHD (Certified HVAC Designer) designation, you can elevate your reputation
as a highly skilled design professional and open doors for the most coveted jobs.
Once you meet eligibility requirements, you can download the study guide, submit an application, and take the exam at a testing location near you.
UA Star from MSCA (Mechanical Service Contractors of America)
UA STAR certification documents a technician’s qualifications and skill levels in heating, air conditioning, refrigeration and plumbing. The exams are nationally recognized and are administered by National Inspection Testing Certification (NITC).
These are the exams that you can take for different levels of UA Star certification:
- STAR HVACR Mastery
- STAR Commercial Refrigeration Mastery
- STAR Residential Light Commercial Mastery
If you meet eligibility requirements, you can apply to take the exam. You also need to commit to a code of conduct that applies to all UA STAR certified technicians.
