To help prevent the spread of COVID-19
Here’s a helpful infographic that illustrates the correct techniques for cleaning and disinfecting tools to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Every HVAC and Refrigeration technician should have this information, so please feel free to share!

SAFE TOOL HANDLING
- Wash your hands or use hand sanitizer before & after handling tools
- Protect yourself with Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Get trained on proper tool use.
TOOL CLEANING MATERIALS
- Mild soap
- Clean damp cloth
- Diluted bleach solution: 5 tablespoons bleach per gallon of water; or 4 teaspoons bleach per quart of water.
DO NOT USE conductive or corrosive chemicals
DO NOT USE gasoline, turpentine, lacquer thinner, paint thinner, chlorinated cleaning solvents, ammonia, or household detergents containing ammonia to clean tools.
NEVER use flammable or combustible solvents around tools!
TOOL CLEANING PROTOCOLS
MILD SOAP & REST METHOD (recommended for batteries)
- Clean with mild soap and damp cloth.
- Let the item rest for 3 days.
- Wipe again with damp cloth (optional).
-OR-
MILD SOAP & DILUTED BLEACH SOLUTION (do not use for batteries)
- Clean the surface with mild soap & water to remove dirt and grease.
- Dip a clean cloth into the diluted bleach solution.
- Wring out the cloth so it is not dripping wet.
- Gently wipe handles, grasping surfaces & outer surfaces.
- Do not allow liquids to flow into the tool.
- Allow the surface to dry naturally.
- NEVER mix diluted bleach solution with any other cleanser!
Avoid touching your face with unwashed hands. Immediately wash your hands after cleaning tools.
CLEANING TOOLS CONTAMINATED WITH BLOOD
- Advanced cleaning required.
- Follow OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen protocols.
- Anyone performing this work must be trained on the protocol and use of PPE.
